Sarah and Domhnall’s Wedding in Dunblane Cathedral and the Hydro Hotel

During the past few years I feel as though I’ve been photographing nothing but tiny elopements in the Highlands. I know the road between my house and Glencoe like the back of my hand these days. In reality though, I have still been busy photographing plenty of big full-size weddings, as well as the little ones, and I thought I’d kick off 2023 by sharing Sarah and Domhnall’s amazing wedding in Dunblane Cathedral and the Hydro Hotel from last year.

I’ve been to both Dunblane Cathedral and the Dunblane Hydro (or the Doubletree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro to give it it’s proper name, but that doesn’t exactly roll off of the tongue). I don’t get to go to very many churches these days, as the vast majority of my weddings are humanist and are at the reception venue, and I really miss the dramatic lighting and the fantastic architecture. Dunblane Cathedral is arguably one of Scotland’s grandest and it was a great honour to be able to work there at Sarah and Domhnall’s wedding.

The whole day was amazing to photograph from start to finish, and there were loads of beautiful touches that made Domhnall and Sarah’s day unique. They drove themselves from Dunblane Cathedral to the Dunblane Hydro in Domhnall’s father’s old car. They had also hired a company called Eze events to spruce up the function room at the hotel and, I have to say, it did look incredible (even though all the little table trees made photography a little more challenging). Domhnall is from the Isle of Lewis and some of his family had even commissioned a special ceilidh dance for them — it was incredible.

After so many tiny weddings it actually felt great to get involved photographing a large 140 person wedding after a bit of a break. I still love getting out and about in the mountains and beaches but I have really missed being able to move amongst large groups of guests and exercise my documentary photography muscles again.
