Nawel and Remy’s Glencoe Elopement

Tell me – what do you want from your wedding?

Every couple dreams of their perfect wedding day, but that dream looks different for everyone. Some couples thrive on grand celebrations – the joy of seeing distant relatives, the excitement of a beautiful gown, the fun of planning every detail with their wedding party, and creating memories with everyone they love.

But what if your perfect day looks different? What if you’re drawn to something more intimate, more focused on just the two of you?

Maybe you envision exchanging vows without the pressure of tight timelines or the stress of coordinating complex logistics. Perhaps you dream of a day where you can truly be present with each other, where every moment feels authentic and unhurried. You might prefer to invest in your future together rather than a single day, or simply feel more comfortable celebrating in a quieter, more personal way.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone – and there’s a beautiful alternative that puts you and your love story at the very centre of your special day.

A Perfect Evening Elopement in Glencoe: Real Stories from the Scottish Highlands

Nawel and Rémy came to Scotland on holiday from France, and while they were experiencing all that our wonderful country has to offer, they managed to squeeze in a truly beautiful elopement. It wasn’t beautiful because of the accessories they bought, or their venue (there wasn’t one) or actually anything material at all. It was beautiful because they could focus completely on being with each other – and that is surely what it should all be about?

The Unhurried Wedding Day: Why Flexibility Changes Everything

They spent almost all of their wedding day relaxing around their lovely little rental cottage that they’d rented for a few days. They had a peaceful lunch together and then spend the afternoon mooching around, planning more of their holiday and slowly getting ready. The weather wasn’t great during the day so Paula (the celebrant) and I chatted with them and we all decided we would just move the ceremony time to two hours later. Rather than stressing about deadlines they were free as two birds to do whatever they wanted, whenever they liked.

This is what I love most about elopement photography – there’s no rushed timeline forcing artificial moments. As someone who’s spent years photographing couples here, I know that Scottish weather has its own schedule, and the most magical light often comes when you least expect it. My approach is always try to work with nature, not against it.

Ralston Cairn: A Sacred Spot in the Heart of Glencoe

At about half past six in the evening (in July there’s plenty of light until 9pm or later), we drove up into the glen and gently walked the beautiful path to Ralston Cairn. Ralston Cairn is a stone memorial in Glencoe dedicated to Ralston Claud Muir, a local train driver who died tragically young at 32, and its inscription “These are my mountains and I have come home” perfectly captures both the profound personal connection he felt to these Highland peaks and the sense of eternal belonging that the dramatic Glencoe landscape inspires in those who love it.

The walk to the cairn takes about 20 minutes, but it is easy going and simply beautiful. There, halfway up the glen, with views of the iconic Three Sisters to their west, and Buachaille Etive Mòr to the east, they got married with absolutely nothing whatsoever to distract them, other than perhaps the beauty surrounding them.

Having photographed dozens of elopements in Glencoe, I can tell you that each one feels completely unique. The light changes throughout the day, the seasons bring different moods, and every couple brings their own energy to this sacred space. My job isn’t to direct or choreograph – it’s to quietly capture the genuine moments as they unfold naturally.

Real Love, Unscripted Moments

You could see that they were completely absorbed in one another’s love and it was truly a beautiful thing to witness. They made their declarations to one another – hugging, kissing and laughing whenever they wanted because, remember, it’s your day and you can do what you like. There are no rules.

There’s something profound about witnessing two people completely present with each other, without the performance pressure of a large audience. My documentary-style approach means I capture these authentic emotions without interruption – you’ll often forget I’m even there.

The Perfect Highland Wedding Feast

After the ceremony, we ambled back slowly through the mountains, visited Loch Achtriochtan for a few more photographs with waterfalls cascading down the mountainside behind them, before stopping by the food truck at Woodlands for a wedding meal of beef stew with horseradish dumplings and a couple of bottles of Glen Spean Snowgoose lager.

Having lived close to, and worked in, the Scottish Highlands for years, I know plenty of hidden gems. I can advise about the best light at different times of day and help you find the local spots that make your celebration uniquely Scottish. I don’t see my role as only that of a photographer; it’s sharing my deep connection to this landscape and helping my couples who choose to make it part of their love story.

Why Choose Glencoe for Your Scottish Elopement?

Glencoe offers some of Scotland’s most dramatic mountain scenery, with locations suitable for every fitness level and weather condition. From the accessible beauty of Ralston Cairn and Glencoe Lochan to the more adventurous peaks for hiking enthusiasts, there’s a perfect spot for every couple’s vision.
