Romantic Marriage Proposal Photography in Scotland’s Wild Landscapes
For over the past 25 or so years I’ve had the dream job of photographing pre-wedding engagement shoots, weddings of every kind imaginable and post-wedding shoots too. Last week I was again privileged to get to photograph the rare event that pre-dates all of these – the marriage proposal!

Turn Your Scottish Vacation into a Romantic Journey You’ll Remember Forever
Alex and Clare were on a short trip from the US and had planned a tightly-packed itinerary for their time here, visiting as many of our wonderful locations as they could. I was genuinely impressed when I heard that they hadn’t only been to Edinburgh and Glencoe but had found the time to wind their way through the roads of Ardnamurchan to the remote, but exceptionally beautiful, Mingary Castle. Few of the visitors I meet here have been to Ardnamurchan – that large part of the Western Scottish Highlands that sticks out of the mainland right above the Isle of Mull. It’s a real shame as it is one of my very favourite parts of Scotland – the narrow roads and its remoteness have kept it quieter and more peaceful than many other touristy parts of Scotland.
I’ve been to Mingary castle a few times before (I photographed Emily and Leo’s tiny wedding there earlier this year) and I knew for sure that this would be an absolutely brilliant location for Alex to propose to Clare. Alex and I had a quick video meet a few weeks before they flew into Scotland and we hatched a simple plan to make it all work…

Perfect Timing to Get the Best of Scotland’s Autumn Light
Alex had a dinner booked in at Mingary Castle – well-known for its superb meals (one day I might even eat there myself…) at 6.30pm so we decided to meet up just after 4pm to finalise the plan. It turns out that Alex had already spotted the exact place I was going to suggest anyway so that made things even simpler. The light was also absolutely superb. After a day of rain and grey skies the window of sunlight promised by the weather forecast actually came true and we felt blessed.
After one or two photographs with Clare, under the guise of a simple holiday photoshoot, Alex got down on one knee in front of the ancient mountain Ben Hiant and asked Clare to take his hand in marriage. With absolutely zero hesitation she said yes. My dog Chip was mildly disappointed as he’d secretly hoped to finish early and go for another walk but I did take him out again later to make it up to him.
We made a few more photographs around the stunning grounds of Mingary Castle and even nipped up the road a little way to capture a few photographs in the sweeping green hills that attract so many people to our country. We even saw a herd of deer.

Many of my couples have travelled from the USA and Europe to propose during their Scottish vacation, and I know how important it is to have both breathtaking photography and a stress-free experience.
