Sarah and Joe’s Wedding at Altskeith
One of the many perks of being a wedding photographer, aside from being able to consume vast quantities of canapés in the course of your working day, is getting to meet past clients again at other weddings. In a typical year about a third of the weddings I shoot will have come via a recommendation from a friend or family member and I really love being able to catch up with people to see how they are enjoying married life together and find out what they have been up to (having children and buying houses seem to be popular pursuits). In 2008 I photographed Valerie and Ewan’s wedding on a sunny day in Aberfoyle and, early in April this year, I had the great pleasure of returning to the same town to photograph the wedding of Joe and Sarah, who is Valerie’s younger sister.
The first Millar wedding was on a scorching hot day in May however the weather today was a blustery mixture of the sunny spells, hail, sleet and torrential rain that are typical of the Scottish climate. None of this mattered though as the setting was fantastic. The small town of Aberfoyle nestles close to the Trossachs in a beautiful setting that is, perhaps, only outshone by the setting of the reception venue – Altskeith Country House. Altskeith sits amongst beautiful landscaped gardens right on the shores of Loch Ard, a short distance to the west, and there can be few places that can match its stunning location. I had actually driven past it many times over the past few years on the way to the nearby Forest Hills resort and had often pondered how brilliant it would be as a wedding venue.
I had an absolutely brilliant day! Joe, Sarah and their families were a huge amount of fun to work with and I think that shows in the photographs. In spite of the changeable weather we managed plenty of shots outside and, towards the very end of the day, Sarah and Joe even managed to pop down to the nearby beach for a few pictures with the snow-clad peak of Ben Lomond in the background. Unfortunately there are no more Millar siblings left for me to photograph but I sincerely hope that I will be back in Aberfoyle to photograph another wedding at Altskeith some time in the not too distant future.
