1950s Wedding on the West Coast of Scotland
Braces and tears – that’s pretty much what I remember about Rachel and Aden’s amazing 1950s wedding on the west coast of Scotland in Greenock, close to Glasgow. Braces, because it was a 50s inspired day and all the men wore braces back then (I guess, did they? They look cool regardless of their authenticity so who cares). And tears because everyone kept crying all the time, even me. It was a VERY emotional day and one of the most memorable and loving weddings I have ever had the pleasure of being to in my entire career as a wedding photographer. Unusually for me I began by photographing Aden and his groomsmen (and fellow band members of Diamond in the Dirt) getting ready in their apartment in Greenock, literally one block from where I was living when I first began my business nearly two decades ago. Their camaraderie was amazing and any groom-to-be would be lucky to have such an amazing bunch of guys around them. Needless to say I had a blast photographing them but I needed to move on to catch a few shots of Rachel at her parent’s house in nearby Inverkip. Both the ceremony and the reception were in Greenock town hall which, I reckon, is a bit of a hidden gem. Greenock doesn’t perhaps have the best reputation but the beautiful town hall is a brilliant venue, especially for the vintage-themed wedding like this one, and Rachel and Aden had done a fantastic job making it look out of this world – I loved it! After a very emotional ceremony, where guests were supplied with packets of tissues left on the chairs, myself and the bride and groom jumped in their wedding car and visited the Old Mariner’s home and then Greenock esplanade, two places made extra atmospheric by the addition of some very Scottish drizzle and some epic autumn foliage on the trees.
I genuinely had such a brilliant day that day and cannot thank Rachel and Aden enough for their hospitality on the day. I’ll be sharing plenty of their wedding photographs on my Instagram page so feel free to follow me there for regular updates, and please share this post too !
